Chen Jinglan Western-style House

Chen Keng

As the name suggests, Chenkeng is a settlement dominated by the Chen clan. In 1960, the Nationalist government renamed it “Cheng Gung Village”, which reflected the wishes to reconquer Mainland China at that time. The Chen clan moved into Kinmen during the Song Dynasty and gradually spread out. Although the settlement was small, it could still be divided into six blocks. Because it is located at the sea and land intersection in the middle of the Kinmen, the Ming Dynasty built a village here to set up an inspection department, but unfortunately there is no trace of it today.

How to get here?

It can be reached from Jincheng by bus 2, 3, Red 1 (about 40 minutes) or Taiwan Trip Bus Line D

Chen Jinglan Western-style House

Chen Jinglan Western-style Building
Chen Jinglan Western-style House is the largest and best-preserved Western-style House in Kinmen, built in 1921. The building materials are imported from southern Fujian, and the beautiful white façade is made of Kinmen oyster shell and Dutch cement. However, such a beautiful Western-style building didn’t have a beautiful destiny. Occupied by the Japanese army as a command during Second World War, and then occupied by the national army. Fortunately, it has now been renovated into the Overseas Chinese Memorial Hall, telling the glory days of Chinese businessmen from Kinmen.
Chen Jinglan Western-style Building
Chen Jinglan was born in the last years of the Qing Dynasty. He was supposed to go to the Beijing for the Examination , but in vain due to the chaos of the wars. So he went to Singapore to work, but soon turned to Indonesia to set up his first company “Nanjin Hao”. After his bussiness expanded, he returned to Singapore to set up a branch “Chengyuan Hao”. In 1917, Chen Jinglan returned to his hometown and began to plan the construction of Western-style buildings. After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, Kinmen was immediately occupied by Japan. Chan fled to Singapore and died there without opportunity of returning to his hometown and witnessing the victory of his country.
